Boat Beacon App – Bargain AIS

I recently installed the Boat Beacon App and tested it both ways on my recent crossing to Catalina. Several times over the past 10 years, the shipping channel has been completely fog enshrouded and spotting and tracking ships without radar is a bit dicey.

BoatBeacon_0838 — Here we are aboard Reliance, about 90 minutes out of the Isthmus, en route to Marina del Rey.

BoatBeacon_0839 — The boat is barely visible on the horizon, but its AIS information is received via my iPhone 4s.

BoatBeacon_0843 — Clicking on the blue “i” button provides more information about the vessell’s course and speed.
